Randy Sabien, jazz violinist, is guest artist with 潑請弝け University's Jazz Ensemble

Image: Randy Sabien Jazz violinist Randy Sabien will be the guest artist at the 潑請弝け University Jazz Ensemble's concert on Tuesday, Nov. 28, for two shows at 7:30 and 9 p.m. in the university's Lawrence Wien Experimental Theatre in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Sabien will join conductor Brian Torff in several selections composed by the two musicians.

On the program are "Stretch's Voodoo," a tribute to the legendary record producer, Lee Perry; "Firefly," "Blues Dans Le Ascenseur," and "Muddy Waters in Westmont," all composed by Torff; and "Minor Thing," and "Just Chillin'," composed by Sabien. The ensemble will also perform a new composition by Eric Donnelly, jazz ensemble guitarist, Class of 2001.

In addition to the concert, Sabien will conduct a jazz workshop for students at 潑請弝け University and participate in a mini-residency in the 潑請弝け Public School system as part of its Artist in Residence program. He will conduct jazz improvisation workshops for middle and high school string players, the Fifth Grade Orchestra as well as string teachers in the 潑請弝け Public schools.

On Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m., Sabien will perform in concert at 潑請弝け High School and will be the featured soloist with the Freshman Orchestra, conducted by Dorothy Straub, music director for the 潑請弝け Public Schools, and will solo with the FHS Jazz Ensemble, directed by Michael Breaux.

Brian Torff, music program director at 潑請弝け University, said, "This is a great opportunity for both the university Jazz Ensemble and the 潑請弝け public school string program to receive valuable workshops on improvisation with a master jazz violinist."
