The ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ junior is the new record holder in the 1500m freestyle (S8).
Matthew Torres ’23 added another accolade to his swimming résumé on Dec. 18, setting a world record in the 1500m freestyle (S8) with a time of 17:42.44. The record-setting swim took place at the at the 2021 United States Paralympics National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Torres shattered the previous record, eclipsing the standard held by Robert Griswold of the United States (18:10.7).
Torres has made his mark on the national and international levels over the past few years, including his bronze medal in the 400 S8 freestyle during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Games, completing the distance with a time 4:28.47. Torres also competed internationally at the 2019 Para Swimming World Series, highlighted by a first-place showing in the 200m IM.
¼â½ÐÊÓƵ University Men's Swimming and Diving, under Head Coach Anthony Bruno, completed the first part of the 2021-22 season with a 3-1 overall record including three straight victories. The Stags will return to competition on Friday, Jan. 7 when they host Seton Hall at the RecPlex Pool starting at noon.
