In collaboration with the League of Women Voters of ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ, session two of a five-part "Spotlight On" series covering the census, redistricting, and the politics of voting, will be presented by ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ University.
¼â½ÐÊÓƵ University will present “Redistricting: How is it Done? And Why is That Important?” on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Event Hall. This is the second free public event in the League of Women Voters of ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ's new multi-part "Spotlight On" series collaboration.
With contributions from students and faculty, this interactive presentation will share an overview of the redistricting process specific to Connecticut, present various mapping scenarios to explore how district lines can be drawn, and explain the impact that district lines can have on electoral outcomes. Gayle A. Alberda, PhD, assistant professor of politics; Mehmet Cansoy, PhD, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology; Kurt Schlichting, PhD, professor of sociology and anthropology; and Jonathan Delgado, research coordinator in ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ's Center for Social Impact, will lead the discussion.
“Learning about the redistricting processes helps us understand its importance and its impact on our communities,” said Dr. Alberda.
The "Spotlight On" series kick-off event, Session 1, “Redistricting: It’s YOUR Vote They’re Talking About!” was held on October 14 and featured author David Daley and Joan Twiggs, who is advocacy director of the Greater Hartford League of Women Voters, LWV CT director at large, and a champion for the LWV’s People Powered Fair Maps™ campaign. The ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Museum and History Center also partnered with the League of Women Voters of ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ on this event.
"Spotlight On" Session 3 will take place at 7 p.m. on December 7. "Redistricting: In the News,” will include panelists Mark Pazniokas, capitol bureau chief and a founder of The CT Mirror; Ken Dixon, government and politics reporter for the Connecticut Post; Cheri Quickmire, executive director of Common Cause in Connecticut; and Kyle Evans, PhD, visiting assistant professor of mathematics at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. The League of Women Voters of ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ is partnering with ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Public Library for this virtual Zoom event. Registration at fairfieldpubliclibrary.org will open by November 1.
