"Gilded Age" is a term that describes the tumultuous years between the Civil War and the turn of the twentieth century. The great burst of industrial activity and corporate growth that characterized this period from the late 1870s until 1900 was presided over by a collection of colorful and energetic entrepreneurs who became known alternatively as "captains of industry" and "robber barons." In his engaging virtual presentation, Dr. Schlichting will highlight many of these tycoons, their social and economic impact on society, and how they influenced the development and character of New York City, Newport, and ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ, through the architecture of their time.
