Grammy Award-Winning Pablo Ziegler Trio Brings New Tango to Quick, March 13

Composer, pianist, and tango maestro Pablo Ziegler is one of the most important figures in Argentine New Tango, a vibrant hybrid of classical music, tango, and jazz.

"He is cool, understated and makes everything look easy and natural... just as a really suave tango dancer seems not to move with feet but on wheels, Ziegler skates the keyboard."

¼â½ÐÊÓƵ University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts will come alive with the music of modern tango when the Pablo Ziegler Trio takes the stage on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 8 p.m.

Comprised of Ziegler on piano, Héctor Del Curto on bandoneon, and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar, the trio will perform an award-winning repertoire of fiery, improvised solos and perfectly orchestrated ensembles that have been described as “rapturous” by The New York Times and “ferociously beautiful and centered around the mathematical precision of the tango with juicy sojourns into jazz and the blues.”

Pablo Ziegler, the son of a tango violinist in Buenos Aires, developed his early musical tastes as a teenager playing jazz and Dixieland on the piano. His musical interests developed and expanded when he was invited to play with the revolutionary tango composer and virtuoso bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla in the late 1970s. Collaborating with Piazzolla influenced Ziegler’s signature blend of jazz, classical, tango, and bossa nova — making him one of the most important interpreters of the nuevo tango genre today.

The Los Angeles Times said of Ziegler, "He is cool, understated and makes everything look easy and natural... just as a really suave tango dancer seems not to move with feet but on wheels, Ziegler skates the keyboard."

Winners of the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album, the Pablo Ziegler Trio’s performance at the Quick Center on March 13 will offer a chance to witness the living history of this vital musical tradition, through innovative arrangements by Ziegler as well as modern classics by his late, longtime collaborator Astor Piazzolla.
