¼â½ÐÊÓƵ’s student club LEAF is pleased to present a new sustainability initiative this spring, to collect used white board and flip chart markers for recycling.
At ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ, the green movement continues to grow with a new marker recycling program planned for the spring. Collection boxes will be placed on campus for community members to toss old white board and flip clart markers. Leaders for Environmental Action at ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ (LEAF), a student club that promotes sustainable practices and environmental awareness, is leading the new initiative with the Campus Sustainability Committee. LEAF will partner with Terracycle, a social enterprise committed to eliminating waste, to recycle the markers. Offering a range of recycling platforms, Terracycle is able to recycle, upcycle, and reuse hard-to-recycle items that would typically be sent to a landfill.
“This program provides a clear way to recycle difficult items by purchasing boxes, collecting items, and sending them to Terracycle,” explained LEAF President Hope Marino ’21.
Beginning in the spring semester, LEAF volunteers will install the zero waste collection boxes on campus and work with faculty and staff across campus to promote the new program.
The idea to bring this initiative to campus began last year when Rebecca Buonopane ’22 proposed the idea during last year’s Campus Sustainability Committee grant competition, though progress on the project ended up on pause until 2021.
