Student-Athletes Earn MAAC and Regional Honors
One of the first major weekends of the fall for ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Athletics wrapped up with several Stags earning weekly honors from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
On Monday, Diego Casielles ’19 of ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Men’s Soccer was tabbed as the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week. Casielles scored three goals for the Stags last week. He netted the game-winner in the Stags’ 2-1 win at Yale on Labor Day and scored both tallies as ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ upset #9 nationally-ranked UNC Wilmington, 2-1, on Friday evening in North Carolina.
¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Field Hockey also had a MAAC Offensive Player of the Week as Emma Matlach ’21 claimed the honor after her own three-goal week. Matlach scored a goal in the Stags’ 4-1 win over Holy Cross on Friday at University Field and buried a pair of markers in Sunday’s 3-1 road win at Vermont.
The awards continued to pile up on Tuesday, as Mayda Garcia of ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Volleyball was selected as the MAAC Player of the Week. Garcia earned All-Tournament honors at the ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Invitational this past weekend, leading all players with 4.64 kills and 4.91 points per set as the Stags went toe-to-toe with Michigan State, Harvard, and Northeastern. Garcia’s 28 kills against Northeastern were a personal best and three shy of the ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ program record.
In addition to the above conference honors, Alana Leahy was named the New England Soccer Journal Defensive Player of the Week for her performance with ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Women’s Soccer. Leahy anchored the Stags’ defensive back line that allowed just three shots on goal in an undefeated home weekend on Lessing Field comprised of a 4-0 win over Lafayette and a 6-2 triumph against Delaware State.
