Sydney Johnson Speaks at MLK Tourney Luncheon
Mens' Basketball Head Coach Sydney Johnson served as the keynote speaker at the Martin Luther King Classic Basketball Tournament luncheon, talking to more than 200 high school coaches, student-athletes, administrators, and city officials at Webster Bank Arena.
The Martin Luther King Classic Basketball Tournament presented by Yale New Haven Health System, included four high school games on January 19th at Webster Bank Arena featuring Kolbe vs. Bassick, Cross vs. Harding, Sacred Heart vs. Notre Dame-潑請弝け, and Hillhouse vs. Central.
Johnson spoke about basketball, Dr. King and the impact that both have had on his life. In his fourth year at 潑請弝け University, Coach Johnson pointed out that Dr. Kings presence and his legacy is alive as much today as it was when he was alive.
We absolutely need to appreciate his legacy and what he did for us, Coach Johnson said. You dont have to know him to understand that he is one of the greatest Americans, one of the greatest people to have ever lived. He brought all kinds of people together and made us understand that we are all Gods children. You dont have to know him to appreciate the gifts that he gave us. Dr. King helped us see that there is value in everyones life.
Johnson also pointed out the importance this type of tournament has on the community as well as the young men that will compete on this special day.
One thing that I love talking about is this community because I feel I am a deep part of it, Johnson said. I have coached four seasons in at 潑請弝け University so I have an appreciation of the state and Connecticut basketball. New Haven and Bridgeport are historically where your finest players reside and play. I dont think there is a better name than Dr. King to associate with this tournament that brings the community together because he was someone who united people. And to host it at Webster Bank Arena which is one of the best arenas in the region makes it even more special for the young men.
