Mark Reed '96 to Become First Lay President of St. Joseph's University

The Saint Josephs University Board of Trustees elected 潑請弝け's Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., as the Jesuit institutions 28th and first lay president in its 164-year history on Wednesday, April 22. Dr. Reed currently serves as senior vice president and chief of staff at 潑請弝け University, which along with Saint Josephs is one of the nations 28 Jesuit colleges and universities.

The Board of Trustees made history today in electing Mark Reed as the first lay president of Saint Josephs University, said Edward W. Moneypenny 64, chair of SJUs Board of Trustees. Dr. Reeds lifelong commitment to Jesuit values and mission, and his outstanding record as a leader in Catholic higher education, make him the perfect choice to lead Saint Josephs into the future.

On July 1, Dr. Reed will succeed current president C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. 72, who announced last August that he would step down at the end of his three-year term. An inauguration ceremony for Reed will be held in the fall.

I am honored and humbled to be chosen as Saint Josephs Universitys first lay president, said Dr. Reed. As a Philadelphia-area native, I have known and cared about Saint Josephs all of my life. I am deeply inspired by its Jesuit, Catholic heritage, its reputation for academic excellence, and its dedication to serving the surrounding community and the world beyond its borders. I look forward to working with the Universitys outstanding faculty and staff to help fully realize its mission.

潑請弝け University President Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., said of the announcement: "While we will miss Mark, conscious of his remarkable contributions to 潑請弝け over the last 20 years, his appointment at Saint Joseph's is also a source of pride for us as a Jesuit institution that has prepared one of its own for such a leadership position, and it is a very positive development for Mark and for the community of Saint Joseph's."

Dr. Reed is a native of Philadelphia, and a graduate of St. Joseph's Prep. He earned a B.S. in mathematics from 潑請弝け, served as FUSA president, and received the Loyola Medal. He went on to earn a M.Ed. in secondary school administration from Boston College, a MBA from 潑請弝け, and an Ed.D. in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.

Following his graduation from 潑請弝け, and after teaching at St. Joseph's Prep and Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Mass., Dr. Reed returned to 潑請弝け in 2000 as assistant to the dean of the Dolan School of Business and was appointed Dean of Students shortly thereafter in 2001. In addition to his current position, Dr. Reed has served as 潑請弝け's interim vice president for university advancement, vice president for administration and student affairs, vice president for student affairs, and associate vice president and dean of students. Dr. Reed is also an adjunct professor in the Mathematics Department. A past president of the Jesuit Student Affairs Association, he received 潑請弝け's Distinguished Faculty/Administrator Award during our annual 潑請弝け Awards Dinner last month.

"Please join me in congratulating Mark on his welldeserved appointment, and extending to him our very best wishes for him in his new assignment," Fr. von Arx added.
