22nd Annual Holocaust Remembrance Service April 20
The University will host its annual Holocaust Remembrance Service on Monday, April 20, at 4:30 p.m. in Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola. The event is open to the public.
This year marks the 22nd year of the event, which was originally initiated by Campus Ministry, and has been co-sponsored with the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies since 1995. A special liturgy includes poems, prayers and responsive readings led by University students, faculty and staff, as well as the lighting of six candles in memory of the 6 million Jews who perished during the Holocaust.
The featured speaker this year is Judith Altmann, a Czech survivor of Bergen Belsen and Auschwitz. She lived in Jasina, Czechoslovakia, when it was invaded by the Nazis in 1939. She was liberated from Bergen Belsen in 1945, and immigrated to the United States in 1948. Mrs. Altmann is a long-time member of The Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut (HCSC), an organization of individuals who were children during World War II and were fortunate enough to survive the horror of Nazism and build new lives in America.
