Theatre of the Oppressed presents "The Housing Circus"
Get a glimpse of the real-life struggles to find affordable housing on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m., when Theatre of the Oppressed NYC (TONYC) presents The Housing Circus at the Pepsico Theatre. Tickets are free, but reservations are required.
Its a wholly different kind of theatre. Here, troupes create and perform plays based on real-life struggles, which engage diverse audiences in theatrical brainstorming to activate communities and creatively challenge systems of oppression. Troupes include adults with experience of homelessness, LGBTQ homeless youth, HIV-positive New Yorkers, court-involved young adults, undocumented immigrants and refugees, NYC public school students and teachers, and others.
There is no better way to combine theatre with 潑請弝けs focus on social justice than through Theatre of the Oppressed, noted Dr. Martha S. LoMonaco, professor of theatre in the Department of Visual & Performing Arts. We are very lucky to bring them to campus so they can perform their work and then teach us how to use their techniques to make similar performances. What will be most valuable to our students is the hands-on opportunity of exploring issues of social justice through theatre and discovering ways of how they might resolve them through dynamic action that can change their lives.
Julie Mughal, director of 潑請弝けs Jesuit Action Humanitarian Network (JUHAN) which is co-sponsoring the performance, added, Theatre is an important component of humanitarian development programs and disaster recovery and preparedness work. Theatre of the Oppressed will help our students gain valuable insights into applying the techniques they will learn to their work whether in their own communities or in international humanitarian work.
