Open Classroom Week — Teachers Teaching Teachers
Just because you have a PhD, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn a few new tricks. Professors across campus will have a chance to discover new teaching methods, sit in on service learning courses, and refresh their way of looking at their profession during Open Classroom Week, running Monday, September 29 through Friday, October 3.
Organized by the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE), the week includes a chance to visit 38 courses across 17 disciplines – from “Thermodynamics” with Dr. Shah Etemad of the School of Engineering (pictured, left) to the graduate-level “American Popular Entertainment & Social History” with Dr. Marti LoMonaco of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The open courses are listed by time and date, as well as by the teaching methods expected to be used next week. Professors may opt for a traditional lecture/discussion-style session or view examples of the critical reflection and hands-on learning techniques one might see in a service learning course. Visitors to Dr. Aaron Van Dyke’s “Culinary Chemistry” may sit in on a hands-on cookout on Monday or a seminar on coffee roasting on Wednesday.
Space is limited. Interested professors should e-mail the CAE at cas@fairfield.edu by noon on Friday, September 26, with the course name(s), date(s) and time(s) they wish to attend and the CAE will coordinate visits.
