Job Shadow 2014: Learning how the real world works

The third annual Job Shadow Week earlier this month was a huge success, with ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ alumni mentoring current students at sites throughout the area in a variety of fields. Co-sponsored by Alumni Career Services and the Career Center on campus, the program gives alumni a chance to help fellow Stags explore their field of interest and see how the “real world” works. Pictured at right (center) is Andy Tennant  ’94, executive producer and creator of the sports magazine show E:60, with four ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ students he hosted at the ESPN site in Bristol, CT.

This year, the program doubled in size from 2013, with more than 178 alumni and 237 juniors and seniors taking part. A reception in Boston during the week drew a record number of attendees, including several Job Shadow pairs, who came together to hear more from Christine Paul Tetreault MA’85, associate director of a l umni engagement at Harvard Business School and principal of Career Pathways Consulting on the theme of effective networking and taking advantage of opportunities. She was introduced by Craig Haba ’91, co-chair of career development in the Boston Alumni Chapter.

“The feedback was overwhelmingly positive,” said Julie Tuozzoli ’85, director of Alumni Career Services, who is already working on Job Shadow 2015. “There are many alumni who want to do it again next year.”

Andy Tennant '94 shared his 19 years’ experience at ESPN, hosting four ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ students, all of whom have aspirations to work in TV or film production. He discussed their career paths with them, and had them sit in on a production meeting for E:60 . Students met on-air talents, and toured ESPNS’s new Digital Center 2, which will be the world’s largest high-definition broadcast facility, set to open in March 2014. Pictured above (l-r):

“I really enjoyed the day,” said Tennant. “It was good to meet the students and give them some first-hand practical experience and exposure to the latest technology…Overall, the Job Shadow Program helps students recognize the link between academics and actual workplace experience.”

Kristen Kelly ’14: Andy Tennant was really such an interesting and nice man… He also shared with us how he got to where he was since graduating in 1994… We attended the E:60 department-wide staff meeting… I learned so much just from listening to what all the different producers had to say…As a student interesting in sports media, I really did learn more than I ever thought I would… I was so lucky to have this opportunity... I have realized that alumni really do want to help students in any way they can!

Robert Meglio ’15: Andy Tennant was a perfect candidate to show us the ropes of the media field. It was definitely the highlight of my winter break and senior year, something I won't forget.

During their day together, Mary Ann Christopher '79 and her student, Francesca Cortese ’15, participated in a meeting with the dean and chief of staff of the College of Nursing of Duke University and discussed opportunities to promote population health. Later they visited a new mother and her baby in the home, monitoring her postpartum recovery, the baby's progress, and providing education.

“Francesca distinguished ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ University through her openness to learn, her flexibility in adapting to new environments and experiences, and her passion for professional nursing,” reported Christopher. “For us at VNSNY, she represents the future of our profession and the promise for optimizing patient care and the broader public health at this time of transformation within the health care system."

Francesca Cortese ’15: …Our community is so widespread and it is comforting as a student to know there are many people who want to help us and see us succeed. I recommend the Job Shadow program to any student… to see an extremely knowledgeable person, who has been through ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ, do what they do best. This opportunity allows students to begin to learn how to create a network of people, teaches students how to be professional, and has a great impact on career planning and narrowing down what it is they want to do!

Mike Feely '99 leads a team of marketers that partners with AOL’s National Sales Team to develop custom solutions for our advertising partners and leverage AOL properties and products—including the Huffington Post , TechCrunch, and MapQuest.

“Lauren and Erin enjoyed an action-packed day,” said Feeley. “It included a client strategy meeting, a run-through of how we develop advertising proposals, and a tour of the HuffPost Live video studios.  Additionally, Lauren and Erin were able to learn about my career path as well as career advice from a number of my colleagues.”

Erin Wolfe ’15: The job shadow program at ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ was one of my favorite things I have partaken in as a student at ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ. It is one thing to learn about different subjects in school, but it is another thing entirely to be able to see how ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ alumni take those experiences and use them in their day-to-day lives. I loved every moment I was at AOL Inc. and could really see myself working for a company like that one day.
