Celebrated British Vocal Ensemble Comes to the Quick
潑請弝け Universitys Quick Center for the Arts presents The Kings Singers, the legendary British vocal chamber ensemble, in concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014. The Kings Singers are particularly extraordinary performers representing the highest levels of musicianship found anywhere in the world today, said Gary Wood, Director of the Quick Center. The Kings Singers are the celebrated all-male vocal sextet recognized internationally for flawless delivery, brilliant harmonies, and a wide-ranging repertoire. They are also consummate entertainers: a class act with a delightfully British wit. Formed by six choral scholars at Kings College, Cambridge, in 1968, the group has had 22 singers throughout its history, and its current members proudly maintain the high standards set over 40 years ago. The King's Singers champion the work of both young and established composers, whether singing Tomkins or Takemitsu, Bach or Bubl矇. Their concert schedule this season takes them to Russia, China, South Korea, and throughout Europe and the U.S. The groups new studio recording and live performance project Great American Songbook from 2013 includes seventeen brand new arrangements written specifically for the group. With a discography of over 150 recordings, The Kings Singers have garnered both awards and significant critical acclaim, including a Grammy簧 for their studio album Simple Gifts on Signum. In June 2013, the groups contribution to classical recording was recognized when they were selected as one of only two vocal ensembles to join the Gramophone Hall of Fame, marking their influence and inspiration across the years. A new collaborative project sees the group work with oboist Albrecht Mayer for a disc of works on the theme of winter, released on Deutsche Grammophon.
Deeply committed to new choral music, they have commissioned over 200 works from prominent contemporary composers and choral luminaries. The Kings Singers have an extraordinary history of television appearances. A favorite of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, they performed with them for the Winter Olympics in 2003 and appeared in their recent Christmas concert, which was broadcast on PBS. The Kings Singers publish prodigious quantities of sheet music: at present, they have over two million items in circulation. Their arrangements are sung the world over by school and college choirs, and by ensembles both amateur and professional.
