Dr. Paul Lakeland selected as 2013 honorary PBK inductee
The votes are in! 潑請弝け Universitys Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa (PBK), the nations oldest academic honor society, announced that Dr. Paul Lakeland, Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J. Chair in Catholic Studies and professor of religious studies, will be the 2013 honorary inductee.
Dr. Aaron Perkus, associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and interim president of the Zeta Chapter, said, An invitation to membership in PBK is a reflection of outstanding achievement. Dr. Lakeland was the obvious and unanimous choice to receive our honorary membership. Since PBK is only offered through American colleges and Universities, the London and Oxford educated Dr. Lakeland never had the opportunity early in his prestigious career. However, in our opinion, through his vast and exceptional scholarly achievements, he is the perfect exemplar of the PBK motto: Love of learning is the guide of life.
Phi Beta Kappa is a wonderful organization devoted to promoting excellence in the liberal arts," said Dr. Lakeland. "This is something to which I too have been committed throughout my life, and I am honored to be invited into membership. This is one of the high points of my academic career.
Dr. Lakeland has been a member of 潑請弝けs religious studies faculty since 1981 where he has taught courses in liberation theology, Catholic ecclesiology, and religion and literature. He has served as department chair in the Religious Studies Department for ten years and the Director of the Honors Program for six years. In 2004 he was named the inaugural Aloysius P. Kelley S.J. Professor of Catholic Studies and founding Director of the Center for Catholic Studies.
Dr. Lakeland holds a Licentiate in Philosophy from Heythrop Pontifical Athenaeum, an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Oxford University, a Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the University of London and his Ph.D. in 1981 from Vanderbilt University. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Theological Society, the Catholic Theological Society of America and the Workgroup for Constructive Theology, a Nashville-based ecumenical association of systematic and constructive theologians. He has been awarded honors for his teaching, including the 潑請弝け University AHANA students Professor of the Year (1990) and Alpha Sigma Nu Teacher of the year (2004-2005).
The author of eight books and several articles, Dr. Lakelands recent publications include The Liberation of the Laity: In Search of An Accountable Church (2003), which won the Catholic Press Association Award for the best book in theology, Catholicism at the Crossroads: How the Laity Can Save the Church (2008), Church: Living Communion (2009) and Yves Congar: Essential Writings (2010). Currently, he is working on a book to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of Vatican IIs Dogmatic Constitution on the Church.
Dr. Lakeland will be formally inducted into the society, along with new senior class members, at the chapters April 20 th ceremony. With over half a million members and chapters at nearly 300 American colleges and universities, PBK is a leading advocate for excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.
